Calvin Ma – Social Anxiety
Calvin Ma is a sculptor living in San Francisco, USA. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Industrial Arts from San Francisco State University, and Masters of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Academy of Art University. In his sculptural works that he refers to as “action figures”, Calvin explores personal issues and struggles with social anxiety and nervousness. As an adult, he faced some difficulties in the social environment, so Calvin turned to toys to keep himself entertained. Working with glaze and ceramic, Ma sculpts anatomic beings with skin that looks like shingles, heads topped with roofs, windows, and doors. These remarkable creatures have titles such as Got to Get Away and Should Have Said, making reference to emotions felt in uncomfortable social circumstances.
