Hadieh Shafie was born in Iran and immigrated to the United States in 1983. Shafie works in a variety of media. A constant element of Hadieh’s work is the significance of repetition, process and time. To create her scroll pieces, Shafie marks strips of paper with texts both hand-written and printed in Farsi and rolls them in concentric circles. For each work she decides on a limited color palette. Concentric forms of text and material is inspired by the Sama dance of the whirling dervishes.
