Will Cotton: Candies and Women
Will Cotton is an American painter born in 1965. He develops an iconography in which the landscapes are an object of desire. Sceneries are usually made up of candy, pastries and melting ice cream. Interesting fact is that the artist creates elaborate scale models of these settings from real baked goods made in his studio. Nude or nearly nude women have filled these candy landscapes. These female characters are icons of languor and indulgence which reflect the feel of the landscape itself. “These paintings are all about a very specific place,” says Cotton, “It’s a utopia where all desire is fulfilled all the time, meaning ultimately that there can be no desire, as there is no desire without lack.”
